What are the steps for patients interested in oral appliance therapy after trying CPAP?
If you have tried CPAP therapy and are now interested in exploring oral appliance therapy, here are the steps you can follow:
- Post-Test Telemedicine Appointment: Schedule a post-test telemedicine visit with your sleep physician. This is necessary to discuss your experiences with CPAP and explore alternative therapies such as oral appliance therapy (OAT).
- Determine CPAP Intolerance: During the consultation, you will need to provide evidence of CPAP intolerance or discuss any issues you faced with CPAP. Certain insurance companies may require this to approve OAT.
- Insurance Verification: Verify with your insurance provider if they cover oral appliance therapy. Some insurances like BCBS, UHC, and Cigna may require documentation of CPAP intolerance or a post-test note confirming CPAP was contraindicated.
- Receive Prescription: If OAT is deemed suitable after the consultation, your sleep physician will provide a prescription for the oral appliance.
Important: We cannot provide telemedicine for a patient who has not gone through our testing service. If a patient has not had a sleep test through SleepTest.com, they will need to start from the beginning and get a new test.
